Strumbellas – In This Life

If I asked you to guess which part of Canada the Strumbellas are from you would probably guess the east coast as their music has that vibe.  This six piece band is actually from Toronto and their last album (which is also their first album) “My Father and the Hunter” was nominated for a Juno Award.  Their latest album is called “We Still Move on Dance Floors” was just released on October 22.  The single that was released on this new album is called “In This Life” and it is the song of the week.

Another good song by the Strumbellas is “Sherriff“, check out the creepy alien/devil character in the video…I thought this one was great for Halloween.  I have no idea what the video is about but that character is weird and I love the faces on the elders watching them play…tough crowd.

On a sad note Lou Reed recently passed away.  Next time you have a few spare minutes download the song “Perfect Day” with all the guest artists singing it, grab a glass of your favourite tonic, turn up the volume, listen to the song, and raise a toast to Lou Reed.  It is hard to listen to this song and not feel better afterward…we have all had these perfect days.  This song is still one of my all time favourites.

Happy Halloween

Gavin DeGraw – Best I Ever Had

When I hear the name Gavin DeGraw I automatically think he is a country singer, not because of his music but his name just sounds country.  He is also one of those artists that has a number of hits but is still somewhat anonymous at the same time.  His hits have been on the lighter side of the pop scale and none have really grown on me.  The first release off his new album “Make A Move” is a departure from his past hits in that it is more upbeat, and it is the first song of his that I have added to my iPod.  Enjoy Best I Ever Had as this week’s song of the week.

Lorde – Royals

Normally when I hear about a new singer and they are 16 years old my first reaction is to dismiss them as another fabricated pop artist.  In the case of Lorde (Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor) I hear something quite different, a more mature sound.  When I hear that sound from someone that young I think they may have career that lasts longer than five years, which is the case of most young pop artists. Lorde release her first album at the end of September 2013.  The song of the week was released in March 2013 and found its way to the top of the Billboard chart in New Zealand (Lorde’s country) and USA.  Lorde is the first ever New Zealand artist to have a number one song in the US.  Enjoy the song of the week called Royals.
