Scouting for Girls – Millionaire

Scouting for Girls is an English band.  The name is a play on the title of the 1908 “Scouting for Boys” handbook.  This is one of those bands that I have not heard of until last week when searching from new music.  Their Greatest Hits album was released on iTunes Canada today.  I checked them out last week as I figured they must have at least one good song if they are releasing a greatest hits album.  Their first album went to number one in the UK in 2007 and their second album went to number two in the charts…and for some reason I am just hearing about them.  They released a new song off the Greatest Hits album called Millionaire and it is the song of the week.

John Newman – Love Me Again

John Newman is a British born soul artist and this pick of the week hit the top of the UK charts this month and is currently sitting at number two.  His break came by singing a couple of tracks for the group called Rudimental on one of their albums.  The song “Fell the Love” topped the UK singles chart, he also sang with Alex Clare on another song off the same album called “Not Giving In“.  John started writing his own songs at the age of 14 and I think we will hear more from this artist.  The song of the week is Love Me Again.

Headstones – longwaytoneverland

This band hails from Kingston, ON and were quite popular in the nineties.  The Headstones can best be described as a punk influenced band.  They broke up in 2003 and in 2011 reunited for a short tour and have been together ever since.  They released a new album called LOVE + FURY in May of this year.  I am usually suspicious when a band reunites and releases a new album, usually the second time around is never the same as the initial run.  However the Headstones new album is quite good and the second release off the album is called longwaytoneverland and it is the song of the week.  Also check out changemyways and dontfollowtheleader if you like more of the punk sound.

Just in case you were not paying attention to music in the nineties here are some of their earlier hits:

Tweeter and the Monkey Man

When Something Stands for Nothing

Smile and Wave

Cubically Contained

I think for the summer I am going to change my posting day to Tuesday.  Sundays are just to nice to be sitting inside trying to find a song…I rather spend the time on the dock.

Cheers.

Transplants – Come Around

The Transplants are one of those bands that are sometimes referred to as a super group, which usually produce below average music.  They have been somewhat on and off again since 1999.  In 2010 the band was back together.  In April of this year they released a new album and the first song released off the album was a below average song called In a Warzone.  It has a hard punk – hard heavy metal sound to it, much like the rest of the album.  The second release off the album was a song that sounded entirely different from the first song and the band sounded like an entirely different band.  The second release is called Come Around and it is the song of the week.

Happy Belated Canada Day….I took yesterday off.

Also check out Travis Barker (Transplants drummer) with Slash and the Transplants on the song Saturday Night.
