Fleet Foxes – Ragged Wood

This week’s song was brought to my attention by my nephew Josh.  This week’s group Fleet Foxes is a Seattle, Washington based indie band.  They have a sound similar to Hey Rosetta.  They have released two albums, the first one is called “Fleet Foxes”, and the second one is Helplessness Blues.  This song is off their first album and is called Ragged Wood.

Gin Wigmore – Black Sheep

Virginia “Gin” Wigmore hails from New Zealand.  Her voice is a cross between Adele and Amy Winehouse – there is an edge to it. This is her second album and probably will be the one that breaks it for her.  There are two songs that stick out on this album.  It is a tossup as to which one I like better however one of the songs sounds like parts of it were ripped off from Lykke Li’s Get Some.  Compare the first 20 seconds of “Get Some” to” Man Like That”.  So that leaves “Black Sheep” alone as usual, as the song of the week.

Radical Face – Welcome Home

I am a sucker for any song that has clapping as part of it, especially when the music stops and the clapping and signing continue, such is the case near the end of Meatloaf’s “You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth” or Boston’s “More Than a Feeling”.  The other thing I fall for in a song is when a song builds in momentum (that feeling that the song is going to increase in speed and intensity –  even if it does not.  Songs such as Red Hot Chili Peppers “Under the Bridge” or Supertramp’s “Fool’s Overture” are examples of songs that start slowly and build.  This week’s song has both of these characteristics but it is different in that it uses clapping throughout the song.  You think you would get tired of the clapping but it works.

Radical Face is a one man band consisting of Ben Cooper from Florida and the song of the week is “Welcome Home”.

Thanks once again to my son Max for sending me this song.
