Sarah McLachlan – Possession (Piano Version)

Last Friday I went to see Sarah McLachlan with my wife and friends.  We were in the center eleven rows from the front.  Sarah was playing the crowd favourites backed up by the Toronto Symphony.  It was amazing, probably the best concert I have ever seen.  I have always been impressed with her song writing and her incredible voice.  Usually in a live concert you hear the weaknesses in the performers when you take the studio out of the equation.  Sarah is just as good (if not better) live as on her albums.

So I thought this week I would mention one of my favourite songs of Sarah’s from the album “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy”.  The song is Possession but it is the unplugged version (just piano and voice) that is at the end of the album hidden after the last song.  In fact nowhere on the album does it indicate that this song is there.  You have to let the last song continue and then this gem comes up announced.  Here is the song (Possession) and if you wish to purchase it go to iTunes and type in Sarah McLachlan Possession and look for the one that says “hidden track”.

Here is the plugged-in version – Possession.

PS – You need to crank this one to really enjoy it…tell the kids to plug their ears.

Metric – Youth Without Youth

Metric is a Canadian band founded in 1998 in Toronto. Metric consists of vocalist Emily Haines (who also plays the synthesizer and guitar), guitarist James Shaw (who also plays the synthesizer and theremin), bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key.  Haines and Shaw also perform with Broken Social Scene.

I have never really been a fan of Metric (or Broken Social Scene for that matter).  Their earlier music never really grabbed my attention even the hit off their last album Fantasies called Gimme Sympathy did not do much for me.  They released a new album called Synthetica on June 12, 2012 and first release off the album called Youth Without Youth caught my attention and is the song of the week.

If you are like me and did not know what type of musical instrument a theremin is click on the link above to find out.

Emeli Sandé – Next to Me

I know you have already heard about the first Adele from the UK, now here is the second. Adele Emeli Sandé known by her stage name Emeli Sandé, is a Scottish soul and R&B recording artist and songwriter. She studied Medicine at the University of Glasgow, but stopped in her fourth year to work on her music career.  She released “Our Version of Events”, in February 2012, upon the release the album peaked number one in the UK.  This album was released June 5, 2012 in North America. The lead hit off the album is called Next to Me and is the song of the week.

The Ting Tings – Hit Me Down Sonny

The Ting Tings are an English musical duo, consisting of Jules de Martino (drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, vocals, piano) and Katie White (vocals, guitar, bass drums, bass guitar). Their big hit was the single That’s Not My Name, which charted straight at number one on the UK Singles Chart on 18 May 2008.  They released their latest album in the UK called “Songs From Nowheresville” in February of 2012.  The song off the album that caught my attention is “Hit Me Down Sonny” and is the song of the week.  It is a bit poppy but it still has and edge.
