The Black Keys – Lonely Boy

The Black Keys are Dan Auerbach (guitar and lead vocals) and Patrick Carney (drummer) and have been around since 2001.  Their last album, Brothers was the album that got my attention with songs like Howlin’ for You  (video is a little silly) and Tighten Up.   They have released seven albums to date with an expected eight album (El Camino) to be released on December 6, 2011.  They have released a song off this upcoming album called Lonely Boy and it is the song of the week.  I think the guy in the video got some of those dance moves from me!

Enjoy !

Evanescence – Lost in Paradise

Evanescence is an American rock band founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody.   Amy has a great haunting voice.  The band released their first full-length album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003. Fallen sold more than 17 million copies.  The next two albums were not as successful and the band underwent a number of changes and changed many of the band members.  On this album most of the key members are back that were involved in creating the Fallen album.  The first release off the new album which was self titled Evanescence was What You Want, followed by My Heart is Broken but the best song off the album is Lost in Paradise and it is the song of the week.

Edwyn Collins – A Girl Like You

Last week I was in the England and Scotland.  I had one spare day and night during the trip and I spent it in Edinburgh.  This week’s post is from a Edinburgh, Scotland artist named Edwyn Collins.  When you hear the song of the week you will think it is David Bowie.  He originally was the singer with the band Orange Juice whose first and only hit was ‘Rip It Up’ in 1982 (not a great song but check it out – the video and song are so 80’s).

After the band split he seemed destined to relative obscurity as an underground act with cult status. However in 1994 he released the critically acclaimed album ‘Gorgeous George’ and the best-selling single ‘A Girl Like You’ reached No.4 in the UK and it is the song of the week.

For those of you that were hoping the song of the week featured BAGPIPES then check out the Red Hot Chilli Pipers playing Smoke on the Water and Thunderstruck as your song of the week!!!

Enjoy and don’t forget to sign up your friends as there is a “Game of Things” on the line.

Adam Cohen – What Other Guy

If you are a fan of Leonard Cohen and were thinking there may not be too many songs left in him, then let me introduce you to his son, Adam Cohen.  After a six year absence from the music business where he previously launched three albums with little success .  His forth album is different than the previous three…in this album he sounds just like his father.  The voice and style of the music is a dead ringer, except his voice is a little better than his fathers.  The album is called “Like a Man”. I guess it is true sometimes that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Enjoy “What Other Guy” as the pick of the week.

Dan Mangan – About as Helpful As You Can Be Without Being Any Help At All

Dan Mangan lives in Vancouver, British Columbia and this is his third album.  His second album “Nice, Nice, Very Nice” was released in September 2009, Mangan was awarded “Artist of the Year” from the Verge Music Awards.  In September 2010, the album was shortlisted by a jury of 200 Canadian journalists, music critics and media personnel for the Polaris Music Prize, which seeks to award the “best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label”.  This same album was produced by John Critchley, a classmate of mine from high school who used to front the band “13 Engines”.

The song of the week is off his new album “Fortune” released September 27, 2011.  The name of the song is a classic name “About as Helpful As You Can Be Without Being Any Help At All”.

Also check out Robots and Sold from his first album.

As for the competition my son Max was the winner…thanks Max.  I would normally give the prize to second place but there was no second place.  I think the fact that almost everyone on the list already has a “Things Game” may be the reason for the poor response.  We will try again in October.  So encourage someone to sign up, then send me their email and you are entered into the draw for a FREE GAME OF THINGS.

Please send feedback once in a while.
