Devin Townsend Project – Hyperdrive

I was made aware of this week’s pick by my son’s friend Jordan…thanks.   I figure after a few weeks of easy listening it is time to kick it up a notch.  When you listen to this song crank it to 11 and get out the air guitar…who cares what your kids/friends think.  Devin Townsend is a Canadian from the New Westminster , BC.  Townsend announced has completed plans for a four-album series called The Devin Townsend Project.  The project’s concept includes a different “theme” and a different group of musicians on each album.   Even within albums his sound can change dramatically.  The song of the week Hyperdrive features Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals.  This album is on the heavier side but other albums are quite different.

Check out Il-ah! which is another good song on the album that is quite different from the song of the week.

Enjoy – tell all your friends to join!

On a sad note REM broke up this week…they had a good 39 year run.  If you are new to the site check out a previous post on their last album.

SuperHeavy – Miracle Worker

Have you  been wondering what Mick Jagger has been up to lately?  Well he has formed a new band with a wide mix of musicians and is called SuperHeavy.  Five stars from the worlds of rock, soul, pop, reggae and world music — Jagger, Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, soul woman Joss Stone, Bob Marley’s youngest son Damian and AR Rahman who scored the “Slumdog” soundtrack — have brought their eclectic styles together for the occasion.  The album is supposed to be released today.  The song of the week is their first release of the album called Miracle Worker… Mick is still strutting his stuff.

I heard rumors that the Stones are planning a 50th anniversary tour.

Don’t forget about the contest…I have not had many entries so far so encourage your friends to join and you could win a Game of Things.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Happiness Loves Company

The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their first album in 1984 and on August 21, 2011 released their tenth album “I’m With You”.  I have purchased a few Red Hot Chili Peppers albums over the years and I have always found them to consist of one or two real classics and the rest of the album is average, this album is above average but still not a classic album.  They released “The Adventure of Rain Dance Maggie” as the first single, it is a good song but I like even more “Happiness Loves Company”, which is the song of the week.

Butch Walker and The Black Widows – Suckerpunch

Butch Walker has been around since the 80’s playing in a number of bands, all of which you have probably never heard.  He has produced and wrote songs for a bunch of artist that you would know.  In 2009 Butch formed a new band called Butch Walker and The Black Widows and released an album called “I Liked it Better When You Had No Heart” with moderate success.  His last album was released on August 20, 2011 and is called “Spade” and this album caught my attention.  There are some good cuts on this album but my favourite is “Suckerpunch”.  It is so new I couldn’t find a good version on the internet so I am sending you to the iTunes site so you can hear 90 seconds of the song.  I don’t know if you have ever been sucker punched but I have and can relate to this song…I still do not know who did it.
