Lykke Li – Get Some

Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, better known by her stage name Lykke Li, is a Swedish indie singer. Her music often blends elements of pop, electronic, and indie rock.  I found out about Lykke Li from my good friend Ted who is also a member of marksmusicpicks.  She is one part Kate Bush, one part Bangles.  She has recently released a new album called Wounded Rhymes and the song of the week is a track from the new album and is called Get Some.

Other songs that I like that Lykke Li has done that I like include:

I’m Good I’m Gone

Adele – Rolling in the Deep

A good friend’s (Craig) daughter (Shauna) sent this song and artist to me a few weeks back.  Adele Laurie Blue Adkins (born 5 May 1988), known professionally as Adele, is an English singer-songwriter. She was the first recipient of the BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice and was named the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2008 in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2008. In 2009, Adele won two Grammy Awards, Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, at the 51st Grammy Awards.

Her singing style reminds me of an earlier artist of the week – Imaginary Cities.  She has a great bluesy voice and it comes through in style on her release “Rolling in the Deep”, which is why it is song of the week.

Other great cuts are off her new album 21, are:

One and Only

Rumour Has It

Don’t forget to comment.  Also send me songs that you think could be the song of the week.

Tech n9ne – The Beast

It is funny how new songs come to me.  Sometimes I spend hours finding new songs and sometimes they just land in my lap.  I heard this song yesterday for the first time and it bumped my previously planned song of the week.  My daughter (Sami) was playing in the Ontario Provincials Hockey Championships yesterday and this is the song they played before heading onto the ice for the gold medal match.  We won gold!!!  Days like yesterday are days you wish you could freeze in time.  As we all know time stops for no one but the best way to hold on to that moment is with a great song that will bring you back to that certain place and time. Tech n9ne The Beast will always take me back to the dressing room before our final game going for gold.

It was a great weekend for the North Bay Ice Boltz – seven teams went to provincials in the various age categories and we won 5 gold and 1 bronze!!!

R.E.M. – It Happened Today

I am a big fan of R.E.M. and have purchased every song they have ever written.  Their pasts few albums have been moderately successful but this is their best album since Automatic for the People.  R.E.M. has this ability to make songs that take you to what I call the edge of frenzy.  The song on their latest album “Collapse Into Now” that takes you to the edge of frenzy is “It Happened Today” and that is why it is song of the day.

Edge of Frenzy Definition – A song that you feel is going to burst into a frenzy but does not – it holds you there on the edge.

In case you are not an avid fan and have not been following R.E.M. in the past few years below is a list of their last four albums and the songs I really like on them.

Collapse Into Now – 2011

Accelerate – 2008

Around the Sun – 2004

Reveal -2001
