Florence & The Machine – Dogs Days Are Over

I found out about Florence & the Machine while searching the UK iTunes site early last year.  It is a real drag that you cannot download from the UK iTunes site if you do not have an address in the UK.  I downloaded a few of the songs from the Canadian iTunes site and then my son purchased the CD.  If you do not own this album stop what you are doing and go and get it.  Lungs is a great album and probably my favourite album that I stumbled onto in the past year.  Florence was just nominated for the Grammy – Best New Artist.  On her web site it states “Florence writes her best songs when she’s drunk or has a hangover”…if that is the case then keep drinking.

There are so many good cuts of this album and the song of the week many of you should have already heard.  However just in case you haven’t heard it the song of the week is “Dog Days Are Over”.  Turn this one up and slam dance through the fast parts just like you did in university.

Other notables on the album include:

Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)

I’m Not Calling You a Liar

Kiss With A Fist

Girl With One Eye

Drumming Song

You’ve Got The Love

Check out Swimming as well as it is another favourite and was not on Lungs.

David Gray – Babylon

I came across David Gray a number of months ago and went out and purchased his second latest release Draw the Line – Deluxe Edition.  I bought the Deluxe Edition as it has a second CD with many of his best hits sung live.  The album is solid and I would recommend adding it to any collection.  All the songs on both CDs are worth a listen and I really like the live CD, even though I usually do not like live albums.  I don’t know how I missed this guy as he has sold 12 million albums and has the all time bestselling album in Ireland – White Ladder – and it was released in 1998.

David Gray is a great songwriter and story teller; I have visions of seeing him in a small bar with a crowd of friends singing along with all the other patrons.  It reminds me of  a bar that used to be at McMaster University called the Rat, and that brings a smile to my face.  I think it is this imagery that makes Babylon the song of the week.  I like the live version better than the studio version of this song.  There is a part in the song where David does not sing but the crowd does and it sounds fantastic but I could not find that song on YouTube so you will need to purchase the live version of Babylon from the Draw the Line album to hear it.  You need to crank this one up to really appreciate it.  Give it a few listens and it will grow on you.

Week 1: Micheal Franti and Sprearhead – Hello Bonjour

I came across Micheal Franti and Spearhead a few years back when listening to Jian Ghomeshi on CBC Radio. I liked what I heard and went out and purchased the album Yell Fire released August 15, 2006. It is a great album, solid throughout and in my opinion his best so far. His next album All Rebel Rockers is a close second on my list.

I caught the band live in November, 2010, in Toronto, it was a great show in a small venue. When I was telling my friends about the concert most had never heard of the band. It always amazes me that talent and popularity do not always go hand in hand. Michael Franti and Spearhead are a group that will grow in popularity and last the test of time – they are the real thing.

My first song of the week is a great tune off the Yell Fire album called Hello Bonjour. Turn it up and check it out and tell me you don’t feel like dancing…go ahead who cares what your co-workers think.

Other notables on the Yell Fire album include:
Time to Go Home
